Official timings

How long each speaking task lasts

The timer uses these times, from the test owners. The TCF gives preparation time only in task 2. The TEF publishes no separate preparation time, so the clock starts straight away.

How to practise

Get the most out of each timed run

Timing yourself is how you learn what 3 minutes 30 or 10 minutes feel like, so the real exam holds no surprises.

  1. Say the prompt out loud first

Read the prompt, then start the timer. On TCF task 2, use the 2 minutes of preparation to note question words, not full sentences.

  2. Keep talking until the clock stops

A pause to think is fine. A long silence isn't. Use a filler like Voyons voir… or describe the word you can't find.

  3. Record, then listen once

Listen for long silences, English words, missing verb endings and the same connector used five times. One recording tells you more than ten silent rehearsals.

  4. Tick the self-check honestly

The checklist follows what each task asks for. Pick one unticked point and fix just that on the next run.

  5. Repeat with a new prompt

Same task, different prompt, until the structure is automatic. Then move to a full speaking section in the mock test.

Your recordings stay on your device

The recorder uses your browser's built-in MediaRecorder. Audio goes from your microphone into this page's memory and nowhere else: no upload, no account, no storage on our servers. Reloading the page deletes it, so download any take you want to keep. You can turn the microphone off at any time with the switch.
