TEF Canada Speaking Section A: How to Ask the Right Questions

TEF Canada Section A in 5 minutes: the 4 French question forms, 40 question templates by topic, an annotated model phone call and how examiners test you.

Ten good questions in five minutes
Table of contents

In TEF Canada speaking Section A (Obtenir des renseignements), you have 5 minutes on the phone with the examiner, who plays the person behind an advertisement. The official instruction is to ask about ten questions to find out more. You're marked on how relevant your questions are, how you react to what you hear, and how well the conversation flows, not on how many words you say.

The winning recipe is simple to describe and hard to fake: open politely in vous, mix four question forms (intonation, est-ce que, inversion and indirect questions), cover different topics (price, dates, conditions, sign-up), and follow up every vague answer. Below are the rules from the test owner's own examiner booklet, 40 question templates by topic, a full annotated model call and a daily drill.

The TEF Canada speaking test lasts 15 minutes in total: Section A (5 minutes) and Section B (10 minutes, convincing a friend). It's face to face and always recorded, so a second evaluator rates you from the recording. For the whole test, see our TEF Canada speaking guide with Section A and B examples and the official TEF Canada exam format.

What the examiner is actually doing

Le français des affaires (the TEF's owner) publishes a livret de l'examinateur, the booklet examiners follow. Four lines in it change how you should prepare.

  1. You'll be asked to show you understood the task. Before recording, the examiner gives you the document and makes sure you understand the situation and who plays whom, sometimes by asking you to explain it. Then recording starts and the examiner opens with « Allô ? ».
  2. The examiner gives partial answers on purpose. The booklet's own example: to « Combien ça coûte ? » the examiner replies « Cela dépend, nous avons plusieurs formules ». It's a test of whether you ask for details. If you say "OK" and move on, you've missed the point.
  3. The examiner won't ask you questions. Their job is to make you ask. When you run dry, they drop statements such as « Il faudra prévoir une assurance spéciale » or « Nous avons une promotion en ce moment ». Each one is a door: walk through it with a question.
  4. Expect a surprise. Examiners are told to prepare imprévus (unexpected details) to see how you react. At 5 minutes they close naturally, for example: « Excusez-moi, j'ai un autre appel, puis-je vous rappeler plus tard ? ».

The booklet splits the Section A goal into three criteria: the relevance of your questions (pertinence du questionnement), initiative and handling the unexpected (prise d'initiative, gestion de l'imprévu), and the quality of the exchange (qualité des échanges). Your grammar, vocabulary and fluency are assessed as well.

The four question forms, and when to use them

French has four ways to ask the same thing. In Section A, using several of them is an easy way to show range. Here they are from most casual to most formal.

FormHow it worksExampleIn Section A
IntonationStatement + rising voiceLe parking est gratuit ?Fine for a quick check, don't overuse
Est-ce queEst-ce que + statementEst-ce que le parking est gratuit ?Safe, neutral, always correct
InversionVerb–pronoun, hyphenatedLe parking est-il gratuit ?Formal, shows control: use several
Very polite, great for variety

Inversion without mistakes

  • Pronoun subject: swap and add a hyphen. Vous proposez → Proposez-vous des cours le soir ?
  • Add -t- between two vowels: Y a-t-il… ? · Faut-il… ? · Le prix comprend-il… ? · Combien coûte-t-elle ?
  • Noun subject: keep the noun, then add the pronoun after the verb. La formation est-elle payée ? (not Est la formation payée ?)
  • With a question word: Quand commence le stage ? · À quelle heure ouvrez-vous ?

Indirect questions: the two classic traps

After je voudrais savoir, pourriez-vous me dire or pouvez-vous m'indiquer, the question becomes part of a statement.

Never je voudrais savoir est-ce que…
  • Qu'est-ce que → ce que, qu'est-ce qui → ce qui: Pourriez-vous me dire ce que comprend le forfait ? Never pourriez-vous me dire qu'est-ce que…
  • No inversion inside: Je voudrais savoir quand la session commence (or quand commence la session), not quand commence-t-elle.

Softeners that sound natural on the phone

The conditional makes any request polite: pourriez-vous, auriez-vous, serait-il possible de, je souhaiterais, ça vous dérangerait de. Use two or three during the call, not on every line.

A model Section A call, annotated

The advertisement and the dialogue below are ours, written in the official format. They are not real exam material. The official sample tasks use everyday ads like this one: a job looking after an elderly person at home, or extras wanted for a musical.

Model answerSection A · phoning about a summer camp job (our example)Target: about NCLC 7–8

Examinateur : Il y a plusieurs échelons selon l'expérience.

Why it works

  1. 1Opens politely, says who is calling about what, and checks the basics.
  2. 2Inversion with a question word: formal and correct.
  3. 3Turns a vague answer (huit semaines) into a precise one.
  4. 4Pins down a partial answer (ça dépend) with a concrete case.
  5. 5Indirect question: varies the form.
  6. 6Personalises the question so the answer is useful to them.
  7. 7Reacts to the unexpected (the first-aid certificate) with two linked questions.
  8. 8Rephrases to check understanding, then builds on it.
  9. 9Closes warmly when the examiner signals the end.

Count them: twelve questions, in all four forms, across seven topics (dates, hours, pay, training, group size, activities, transport). Half of them only exist because of the answer before. That's what qualité des échanges sounds like.

Speaking

Timings from Le français des affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France). The TEF publishes no separate preparation time for speaking, so the timer runs straight away.

Want an examiner to answer back? The TEF Canada speaking drills and the TEF speaking practice with an AI examiner play the other side of the call, including partial answers. The speaking cards game draws Section A prompts for you with the timer built in.

Seven mistakes that cost points

  1. Asking what the ad already says. If the ad says "from 1 November", don't ask when it starts: ask whether you could start later, or how long the commitment is.
  2. Accepting a vague answer. « Ça dépend » is bait. Ask « Ça dépend de quoi ? »
  3. Ignoring the examiner's statements. « Nous avons une promotion en ce moment » calls for « Ah bon ? En quoi consiste-t-elle ? », not silence.
  4. Ten questions in one form. Five est-ce que in a row sounds like a list. Rotate the forms.
  5. Switching to tu. Section A is formal from « Bonjour » to « Bonne journée ». Save tu for Section B.
  6. Reading a memorised list. The examiner adapts to you; if your next question doesn't fit the last answer, it shows.
  7. Broken indirect questions. Je voudrais savoir si… and Pouvez-vous me dire ce que…, never est-ce que or qu'est-ce que after them.

A 15-minute daily routine

  1. Warm up the forms (3 min)

  2. Topic sprint (4 min)

  3. Full call with the timer (5 min)

  4. Listen back (3 min)

TEF Section A vs TCF task 2

If you're still choosing a test: the TCF Canada's speaking task 2 is the same skill, with differences. You get 2 minutes of preparation and then 3 minutes 30 of interaction, and the situation isn't always a phone call. Everything in this guide carries over; see our TCF Canada speaking task 2 examples for its format, or compare the whole tests on TCF Canada vs TEF Canada.

What score are you aiming for?

For Express Entry, your TEF speaking result is read from the "Équivalence ancien score" column of your certificate, and NCLC 7 is the level behind the French CRS bonus and French-category draws. Check where any score lands with the TEF Canada NCLC converter, and see every target in our NCLC 7 on the TEF Canada guide. Then sit the speaking part of TEF Canada mock test 1 under exam conditions, or start from the TEF Canada practice test hub.

Our take

Section A rewards curiosity more than vocabulary. Candidates who score well don't know fancier words; they listen, catch the vague answer and ask the next question. Drill the four forms until they're automatic, keep a mental list of five topics, and treat every « ça dépend » as a gift.
